Vascular access is the lifeline for hemodialysis patients. The three main types are: (1) Arteriovenous Fistula (AVF) — surgical connection between an artery and vein, considered the gold standard with lowest complication rates; (2) Arteriovenous Graft (AVG) — synthetic tube connecting artery to vein, used when native vessels are unsuitable; (3) Central Venous Catheter (CVC) — temporary or tunneled catheter, used for urgent dialysis or when AVF/AVG is not possible. Monitoring access function through flow rates, recirculation testing, and physical examination is critical to prevent thrombosis and infection.
