Potassium binders work in the GI tract to trap potassium that would otherwise be absorbed. Older agent: sodium polystyrene sulfonate (Kayexalate). Newer agents: patiromer (Veltassa) and sodium zirconium cyclosilicate (Lokelma) — both more tolerable and predictable, and studied specifically to keep patients on RAAS blockade. They are adjuncts to, not replacements for, dietary potassium control and cause-focused care.
