Kt/V is the standard measure of dialysis adequacy recommended by KDOQI guidelines. A minimum Kt/V of 1.2 per session (for thrice-weekly HD) is considered adequate. The formula accounts for the dialyzer's ability to clear urea (K, measured in mL/min), the duration of the treatment (t, in minutes), and the patient's total body water volume (V, in mL). Higher Kt/V values indicate more thorough dialysis. Monitoring Kt/V trends over time helps nephrologists adjust prescriptions to maintain adequate clearance as patient conditions change.
