Is Jardiance different from Farxiga for kidneys?

Empagliflozin is an SGLT2 inhibitor approved for CKD with albuminuria (eGFR ≥20) and heart failure. The EMPA-KIDNEY trial (NEJM 2023) — the largest CKD trial ever — showed a 28% reduction in kidney disease progression.

How it affects the kidneys

EMPA-KIDNEY enrolled 6,609 people with CKD (many without diabetes and without albuminuria) and showed empagliflozin slowed progression and cut hospitalizations. It is the SGLT2i with the broadest CKD label: can start at eGFR as low as 20.
