What is normal eGFR in children?

Healthy children have HIGHER eGFR than adults: roughly 90-165 mL/min/1.73m² depending on age (peaking in early childhood). A child's eGFR must be interpreted against age-specific norms — 70 in a 5-year-old is abnormal, while 75 in an 80-year-old can be normal.

Which formula is used for children?

The Bedside Schwartz (eGFR = 0.413 × height/creatinine) is the standard for children 1-17 years. It's simple and validated. The adult CKD-EPI equation should NOT be used in children, and Schwartz isn't valid in infants under 1 year (cystatin C or urine clearance is used there).

What are common causes of childhood CKD?

Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT), reflux nephropathy, glomerulonephritis (IgA, post-strep), nephrotic syndrome (minimal change), polycystic kidney disease, and hemolytic uremic syndrome. Early detection and growth optimization matter greatly in children.
