Citrate is a natural stone inhibitor: it binds calcium in urine and blocks crystal formation and growth. Drinking lemon water (half a lemon in water, daily) raises urine citrate modestly — the basis for using lemonade therapy as an adjunct in calcium-stone formers.
Evidence: studies show lemonade therapy (lemon juice with water) increases urine citrate in stone formers. It's a reasonable low-cost adjunct — though for people with strong hypocitraturia, prescription potassium citrate is the proven treatment.
For CKD: lemon is low in potassium (~140 mg per fruit), so lemon water fits renal diets. Watch the sugar if you use lemonade mixes. And lemon water does NOT 'cleanse' kidneys or treat kidney failure — its benefit is specifically stone-related.
