'Kidney detox' and 'kidney cleanse' supplements have no evidence behind them — and some contain nephrotoxic herbs that damage kidneys. Your kidneys detox constantly on their own; the best 'detox' is water, blood pressure control, and avoiding NSAIDs.
The kidneys are self-cleaning filters. 'Detox' teas and supplements have zero clinical trials supporting kidney cleansing — the concept is marketing.
Some ingredients are actively harmful: aristolochic acid (in certain traditional Chinese herbs) causes permanent kidney failure; high-dose vitamin C converts to oxalate and causes stones; some 'detox' products contain hidden NSAIDs or diuretics.
Supplements that DO have real kidney evidence work through normal mechanisms — SGLT2 inhibitors, finerenone — and are prescription medicines, not herbs.
If a product promises to 'flush' or 'cleanse' your kidneys, that's a red flag, not a benefit. Check any supplement with your pharmacist for kidney risk.
